Chasing the Planes in EDH

Normally, Nicol Bolas planeswalks to Pro Tours, looking for strong opponents who might pose an interesting challenge to him.  This time, however, he decided to visit Grand Prix Prague as well, where he found some of the funniest and wackiest EDH interactions ever.  Turns out a great deal of DCI judges, as they seemed to be called, were just waiting for Planechase to be released to bring more silliness to an already erratic format.  British judge Nick Sephton put is as simply as: “EDH and Planechase just go well together”.

It’s not only about how crazy EDH becomes when planes’ abilities get involved.  There’s also the added strategy element of when to try to planeswalk away from a given plane and the possible alliances this brings.  It’s fairly common to sign a “no-planeswalking” treaty between two or more players if the current plane is detrimental to another player.

Some of the wacky stories at Prague include:

  • Someone casting Lighting Helix while being at Glimmervoid Basin and netting 75 life in the process.
  • Nick Sephton trying to planeswalk away from Sanctum of Serra in order to get rid of the nasty critters that were nibbling away at this life totals, failing to do so over 40 times, and suffering a most horrible death for his lack of planeswalking spark.
  • Falko Görres gaining 40 life in one turn thanks to Fields of Summer’s chaos ability, after starting his turn at 8 life.
  • Isle of Vesuva rendering Generals useless.
  • Goat loving madness abounds at Goldmeadow, making it a fan-favorite plane because it's so damn ridiculous to have lots  Goats!

Thanks to Andreas, Falko, and Nick for input.
