Prague - City of Adventure

After gaining a lot of experience on the Grand Prix circuit I was ready to test for L3 at Pro Tour Prague 2006. Luckily for me Adam Cetnerowski was going to be my roommate for this particular Pro Tour. (Luckily, because up until then Adam had a perfect record of rooming with testing candidates: All had passed their test while sharing a room with Adam!)

As Thursday came it was time for the Last Chance Qualifier. I was one of the people who had volunteered for helping out at this event. Philipp Daferner was going to be the HJ and Rafael Dei Salvi was his back up. The event was supposed to start at 18.00 hours, but due to the fact that there were still so many players in line for registration the event was postponed a bit.
This was very fortunate because none of the HJ's had yet arrived at the tournament site. Leaving me and 4 other judges to the task of running this 500+ player LCQ. First things first; I took the lead in deciding what had to be done, proclaiming myself as HJ until further notice. We started out with preparing everything for handing out the product and tried to gather as many judges from around the hall to help out. At one point we had about 12 judges when Philipp showed up. I carried all my tasks over to him and went to bed, as I was scheduled to take my written test the following morning.

On Friday morning bright and early I started on my written test. It took some trouble but I finished it within reasonable time. Come the next day I was asked into the interview and after 3.5 hour I was given the good news! I passed! (And Adam kept his streak going!)

Sunday, after the judge dinner, I convinced some of the judges to come with me to celebrate my promotion. There I met the girl I danced with the night before and I couldn't resist dancing with her some more! We danced all night and this night I didn't have to go back to the hotel earlier! Still I stayed too long, because I missed my flight the following day. Forcing me to stay one more day in Prague. I didn't mind it, because I was offered to stay with her another day. Guess what! Now 3 years later, we're still together and getting married next year!

You can imagine how worried I was, when Richard still hadn't showed up in his room around noon, while his flight was around 9 AM.

A simple and basic card

I was playing in a Constructed Nationals qualifier tournament some months after Mercadian Masques rotated out. My third round opponent started with Island and on my end-step Brainstorm.

- Judge!...
- What?
- My opponent played a Brainstorm at the end of my turn.
- Good for him.
- It’s not legal.
- Of course it’s legal. He gets priority at your end of your turn.
- The card is
not legal anymore.
- Opponent and judge: What, of course it is…
- Let me check Oracle
- Why would Wizards not keep printing such a simple and basic card??? I was sure it was in Sixth edition…

How to get a tan at a tournament

Lorwyn block PTQs. The worst visited PTQs in years, with player totals ranging from 27 to 41. We flash to Eindhoven, where I am headjudging. However, the moment I get there, I find that the venue we arranged was double booked with a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. They would take up all the room, and we had no place to go. However, it was a sunny day. So me and my fellow judges took it to ourselves to find every empty trash can, garden chair, garden table, etc. One of the comments I heard after the tournament: "Why are you so tan? I thought you were going to a MTG tournament."
